Excel at Marketing: The Internet
“If you build it, they will come.” Well, not exactly.
There’s a sentiment in that old movie quote that has a certain amount of truth to it: you can’t get people to pay you for your work if you don’t have a functioning business. But having an office, a truck, tools, and the ability to do great work isn’t enough.
If nobody contacts you to come and do work for them, then you don’t get leads. And leads are the lifeblood of your company.
Last week we talked about the importance of having a Great Brand that you can ride to even greater success. It’s the critical ingredient that you use to excel at marketing your company, so that you can bring in more leads. If you’re fishing for leads, it’s better to have a brand that’s going to stick in your customer’s mind than one that they forget a moment after they see it. But where are you fishing for leads?
Yes, your truck should be lettered, yard signs are important, there’s mailings, home shows, radio, tv – and you need to get the right mix to make the most of those opportunities. But if there’s one place you need to excel at marketing to bring in the lion’s share of leads, it’s the Internet.
Why? Well, you know that old saying “All roads lead to Rome?” It used to be that if you wanted to get in touch with a business, say one you heard about on the radio or noticed on your drive to work, you’d go to the Yellowpages. Back then, every road that a lead took, led there. Now, the Internet is the new Yellowpages.
Your potential customer, says, “Oh, yeah, that company that does x that I heard of because of y. I’ll look them up on the internet.”
That means when a potential prospect does a web search and they come to the virtual storefront that is your website, you don’t just want to be ‘okay’ at digital marketing. You want to be excellent. What steps are you taking to excel there?
